Common agency with informed principals: Menus and signals
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper I consider games in which multiple informed principals simultaneously compete to inuence the decisions of a common agent. I focus on the problem of characterizing the equilibrium outcomes of such games. I rst show that, to solve this problem, one can invoke neither Myersons Inscrutability Principle, which holds in agency games with one informed principal, nor the Extended Taxation Principle, which holds in commonagency games with uninformed principals. I then provide two characterizations of the equilibrium outcomes: one for games in which the principals delegate the nal decisions to the agent, and one for games in which they participate with the agent in making such

Negotiation and take it or leave it in common agency
This paper contrasts models of common agency in which principals compete in incentive contracts (that is, they make take it or leave it offers) with models where principals offer agents menus of incentive contracts from which the final contract is negotiated. It is shown that pure strategy equilibria in incentive contracts are robust to the possibility that principals might offer menus. In addi...
متن کاملCommon Agency and the Revelation Principle
In the common agency problem multiple mechanism designers simultaneously attempt to control the behavior of a single privately informed agent. The paper shows that the allocations associated with equilibria relative to any ad hoc set of feasible mechanisms can be reproduced as equilibria relative to (some subset of) the set of menus. Furthermore, equilibria relative to the set of menus are weak...
متن کاملOn the use of menus in sequential common agency
We illustrate, by means of two examples, why assuming the principals offer simple menus (i.e. collections of payoff-relevant alternatives) as opposed to more general mechanisms may preclude a complete characterization of the set of equilibrium outcomes in certain sequential contracting environments. We then discuss how refinements of the solution concept, or enrichments of the menus that allow ...
متن کاملDamned If You Do and Damned If You Don’t: Two Masters
We study common agency problems in which principals (groups) make costly commitments to incentives that are conditioned on imperfect signals of the agent’s action. Our framework allows for incentives to be either rewards or punishments and an equilibrium always exists. For our canonical example with two principals we obtain a unique equilibrium, which typically involves randomization by both pr...
متن کاملMarket Participation under Delegated and Intrinsic Common Agency
In a stylized model of common agency with two competing principals and a privately informed agent, we study how competition in nonlinear pricing affects the measure of agents who participate. Two forms of competition are examined. When participation is restricted to all-or-nothing (what has been called “intrinsic” agency), the agent must choose between both principal’s contracts or selecting he...
